Placenta Encapsulation is Supported

There are people that ask why placenta encapsulation is supported by so many moms and those of us who provide this service? I tell everyone who inquiries with us at First Coast Doulas, there have been very limited studies done on the consumption of the placenta. The studies that have been done are old, outdated, and weren’t double blind. There is no evidence to support or disprove the claims that it can help or hurt anyone. I am very forthcoming that one person’s experience may not be the same as the next. So it’s natural that one might wonder why anyone would support the practice of placentophagy.

Stay with me!

I can’t speak for others. What I can do is tell you why I not only support this practice, but why I provide this service to our community.

Placenta encapsulation is supported by me because:

  1. I will always support women in their choices for themselves without judgement or my own agenda.
  2. I want them to be as safe as possible while doing this.
  3. There is no evidence or studies to prove or disprove anything.
  4. I’ve seen enough to believe it can be helpful.

Women want support in their choices. One of my beliefs is that they should always have autonomy over their bodies, what they do with them, and what they put in them.

More and more women are requesting placenta encapsulation. I’m here to provide this service to them in the absolute safest way possible. Women do not have to settle for subpar standards and service. When they select an certifed encapsulation specialist whose in favor of highest standards and is prepared for regulation of this otherwise uncontrolled industry they are getting the very best the industry has to offer. First Coast Doulas wants better for women, families, and public health.

There’s information out there about placenta encapsulation, good, bad, and the ugly.

Here’s the thing though, there’s no evidence or studies for or against placenta encapsulation. There have been NO studies to date on a large enough scale to prove anything. There are no studies that have been done to say that eating your placenta after encapsulation is dangerous, a waste of time, is only placebo effect, or has benefits! Zero! None!

What we do have are women who are sharing their experiences with other women. They’re saying, “This is why I did it and this how it helped me. This is why placenta encapsulation is supported by me and I’ll do it again if we have another baby.”

I’ve personally seen and heard enough from our clients to believe it can be helpful.

It’s certainly not helpful to all, but to many who take advantage of this practice, it is! From personal accounts (not studies, remember studies are large scale over time) we hear time and time again that there is noticeable difference between taking them and forgetting to take them or stopping them.

I would say it fair safe to make the assumption that placenta encapsulation could possibly help.

Majority say they notice a difference in their energy levels when they take the capsules versus when they forget to take them. We hear partners call them “happy pills”. I’ve had moms come to me and say I had to slow down on taking my placenta capsules because I was producing so much milk. It’s also not uncommon at all for our clients to report back that their anxiety and or depression, in conjunction with or without medication prescribed by their doctors was more manageable while taking their capsules versus without.

All these claims and no evidence is a shame, but it doesn’t stop majority of women from trying this practice out for themselves.

Placenta encapsulation is supported by First Coast Doulas whether it’s reported benefits can be proven or if it’s only placebo effect. We say, if your ingesting your placenta for your own personal beliefs or wonderings and you’re doing it in the safest way possible, go for it!

First Coast Doulas’ clients know without any doubts that they are getting a legally licensed and insured business, one that is trained, certified, and practicing safest preparation.

Clients know the placenta they receive in the capsules is theirs and no one else’s and that it was never exposed to foreign microbiome, airborne or otherwise. Their placenta never leaves their possession. They know that access to accurate information and in person, one on one support for their family on topics such as breast or bottle feeding, diapering, and their postpartum body is complimentary and encouraged during our time working together.

Savvy moms and dads already know some of the challenges they’ll face in parenthood.

The new generation who are raising these tiny humans are deciding to be proactive instead of reactive with their health.

Placenta encapsulation is supported by First Coast Doulas and by many parents and providers. First Coast Doulas is happy to meet families where they are at to help them navigate this journey through life transitions!

Happy birth and parenting from your friends at First Coast Doulas!

Placenta Pills Are In The News Again

Placenta Pills Are In the News Again

Placenta pills are in the news again for helping new moms post-birth! Women are choosing to have their placenta made into pills after they give birth. They want extra help in healing, transitioning, and the best chance to thrive post-birth.

They deserve to do that free from judgement!

As moms we’re already our own toughest critics. Am I right?

We want to be the very best version of ourselves, for ourselves and for our families. The last thing a new mom wants is judgement from others. It’s not surprising to me that many moms, probably close to half who are purchasing placenta services, are hush-hush about their decision. I get it!

New moms just want to feel good and relish the moments with their new baby!

Client’s we’ve worked with say they attribute a lot of their post-birth enjoyment to their placenta pills and their experience with us. Likewise they feel more supported and have a judgement-free place to come with questions about anything baby or body related. Additionally women we’ve worked with say that their placenta pills have helped increase their energy, build a healthier milk supply, and decrease sadness. Many have described feeling an overall sense of well-being while taking their placenta pills.

Celebrities boast better sleep, more energy, help with weight loss, help combating post-natal anxiety and depression, and help with collagen production.

While there have only been small studies done the proof is in the mouths of women all over the World.  They are shouting it from the roof tops and sharing it in the news. Others are discussing it in their parenting groups and describing the capsules as their “magic” pills.

About half of our clients are sharing openly about their decision to consume their placenta and their experience with First Coast Doulas.

They choose FC Doulas because:

  • Their privacy is highly regarded. We know the experience is theirs to share or keep private.
  • We have the very highest standards and safest practices anywhere in Jacksonville
  • They’re getting an experience, not just capsules.
  • They’re getting compassionate support and years of knowledge from professionals who are passionate about families.
  • We’re working hard to build bridges and improve the maternal healthcare system.
  • Every client we serve will know without any doubts that their capsules contain their placenta (and ultimately bloodborne pathogens) only, guaranteed.

If you have questions about placenta encapsulation we would love to walk you through our process and answer all your questions. Share our blog with your friends, your co-workers, and moms in your mom’s groups and be in the know the next time placenta pills are in the news again!

Placenta Capsules: Sharing More Than Experience, Part 1

Placenta Capsules: Sharing More Than Experience

We were contacted by a woman, we’ll call her Abby, and she wanted to learn more about our placenta encapsulation process. To be honest her email seemed suspicious. You see, in this business it’s not uncommon to receive emails from weirdos looking to talk about vaginal checks, sex during pregnancy, and such. Well, as it turned out Abby had valid reasons for being cautious, using an alias to protect her identity, and for contacting us.

Without further ado, Abby shares her story.

Placenta Capsules: Sharing More Than Experience

By Abby Anonymous

I will apologize now for the book, but there is nothing that can be cut from my story. Every word and every line is relevant and important. I never wanted to share my story

What I wanted was answers. I wanted to go back to the day she picked up my placenta and change my mind. I never asked for this.

Now, after talking with Liz, owner of First Coast Doulas, I know without any question that I need to share my story to tell others so they don’t make the same mistakes that I did. I don’t know if the other person knows what happened or if there are more people this has happened to. Maybe if the right people in the community share this blog they’ll see it.

What I really want is for others to beware when hiring someone for placenta encapsulation.

I have to protect my identity because I work in the medical field and do not want to be questioned by my colleagues. They already pick fun at me for choosing a more natural approach to all things. They ridiculed and mocked me about my decision to “eat my placenta”, now I wished I would have never told them. At the time they were just a little annoying, but as you can imagine if they found out about this I would be mortified.

Sharing my truth with people through this blog seems like the right thing to do because Liz was gracious enough to sit down with me and explain her process, step by step, from providing the clients with everything they need to take the placenta home to protocol for sanitization, and she answered all of my questions that she could answer.

I was 6 days post-birth when I received the call I never in a million years imagined I’d get.

It was the person who I trusted to pick up my placenta and return my placenta capsules to me on the other end of the call. Before she even broke the news to me I could sense regret in her voice. I knew something wasn’t right.

What she said next blew me away, “I am sorry, but I think I may have accidentally given you another mom’s capsules by mistake. I can pick the bottle up and bring you your capsules.”

What she said next I’m not sure, did anything really matter after that noise?

I hung up the phone in her face. I got sick. I literally became sick to my stomach and vomited not once, but twice.

I called her back and asked her how the hell it happened, who the other person was, and asked if she had spoken with the other person yet? I wanted to talk to her.

I was terrified and rightfully so.

The risks of taking someone else’s placenta capsules means you risk getting any contagious diseases the other person may have. You also risk your body having adverse effects to the other person’s placenta since its complete make up is unique to the person who grew it and delivered it.

The things I thought that day and in the days since: What about my baby, what if I contracted something awful can I pass it to her through breastmilk? I have to tell my husband and we will have to have protected sex until I know for sure I am safe. Why me? How could I of avoided this?

She said she believes her young son might have switched around the Post-it notes she labels the dehydrators with.

Post-It Notes?

What kind of shit show is she running exactly?

She continued, saying she has never had an issue with her son touching the dehydrators until recently and went on to say he has become a bit obsessed with playing with the dials and labels recently.

So this could have happened before and would likely happen again if she didn’t stop. Who knew what else could have happened. Why was the dehydrator around her son?

To be continued…

Pumping and Breastfeeding On The Fly

Pumping and Breastfeeding On The Fly

Jacksonville Pumping and Breastfeeding On The Fly
Mamava Suite Jax. FL Picture from www.mamava.com

First Coast Doulas knows that breast may be best for some while bottle may be best for others. Pumping and breastfeeding on the fly are a necessity!

We support parents all over Jacksonville who need or choose to breastfeed and bottle feed, formula and breastmilk.

Florida law protects a mother’s right to breastfeed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother’s breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breastfeeding.

Cover, no cover, it’s what the lactating woman herself feels comfortable with, no one else.

Pumping and breastfeeding on the fly just got a little cozier!

Traveling with a baby in tow is no easy feat. If you’re a breastfeeding or pumping mother you know it’s a little more challenging to be comfortable when out and about while lactating. Whether you are flying cross-country, planning a trip to the zoo, or just doing some shopping at the mall all moms deserve the right to be more comfortable while feeding or pumping milk for babies!

We have some good news for those of you flying into or out of Jax International Airport!

We are fortunate enough to have a  Mamava Suite located right here in Jacksonville. These suites are beautifully designed, totally breastfeeding and pumping friendly, and offer a quiet, private place for women to lactate, relax, and do their thing should they want another option.

Nursing during the newborn stage can sometimes feel awkward at first while mom and baby find their rhythm. Pumping can seem daunting with all the parts, pieces, and funny sounds the pump sometimes make. Let’s not forget there’s rarely an electrical outlet to plug up a pump. A woman’s body can have a difficult time with letdown if she feels unsafe or stressed out. This nursing, pumping, breastfeeding suite helps eliminate some of that stress. Older babies and toddler get easily distracted by things around them and may fight sleep or take twice as long to nurse when surrounded by stimuli. Ain’t nobody got time for that, especially a mom on a mission!

Anyone with an older toddler knows that when you’re feeding the baby the toddler makes every attempt to get away with all the things!

Bottom line, women deserve options for feeding babies and being more comfortable no matter where they are!

Complete with table, benches, plugs, and a locking door so your puppy-monkey-baby can’t escape, these suites are amazing! With 32 square foot of space the Mamava Suites are roomy enough for a stroller, luggage, and company. The Mamava Suite is first class all the way.

We have a long way to go in Jacksonville, and in the United States as a whole to make moms more comfortable breastfeeding and pumping breastmilk for babies, but this is an amazing start! These Mamava Suites are located in airports, zoos, arenas, hospitals, schools, malls, and a few other places. We desperately need better options especially in children’s hospitals like Nemours.

When I saw the Mamava Suite in Jacksonville my first thought was this isn’t about isolating breastfeeding moms or hiding what pumping looks like, it’s about families being supported in their choices for their family!

Way to go Mamava!

August is breastfeeding awareness month Vote here for one lucky place to get a lactation suite of their very own. We voted for the Jacksonville Zoo, but you can vote for anywhere!

placenta capsules jax fl

First Coast Doulas has expanded!

Our professionalism, safe practices, and compassion make us extraordinary! People, including healthcare providers love the way we’re providing placenta encapsulation. This part of First Coast Doulas has grown so much so that we’ve decided to branch into First Coast Placenta! We unveiled at The Prego Expo in Jax. this past Sunday!

placenta capsules jax fl

Have you ever heard of placenta encapsulation?

Yes? No? Well, let me tell you all about it!

After birthing your baby you will also birth your placenta. The placenta is the life sustaining element between yourself and your baby. Many women give very little thought, if any to their placenta. It’s not uncommon to think back on your birth and wonder how you didn’t see it, since after all you birthed it.

Your placenta is discarded as medical waste, used in cosmetic products, and even used in stem cell research. OR it can be used to nourish the mother after birth. Full of nutrients it’s made perfectly by you, for you!

Bizarre I know!

Not only is it not gross or weird at all, but it also makes complete sense if you really think about it!

In very simple terms placenta encapsulation is a process which involves making an all natural supplement from one’s own placenta. The placenta is handled respectfully, and in a safe manner, dried, ground into a powder, and put into capsules. The placenta capsules are made for the woman who grew it, not anyone else. Your capsules last approximately six weeks and after that, if you had a tincture made you can use that to extend the benefits!

Healthcare workers love the way we are providing this and many our trusting us to handle their placenta encapsulation because they love that we set the highest standards in Jacksonville, Florida.

You contact us and we schedule a time to come to your home to put your placenta into capsules!

Yep, in your own home!

REMEMBER- you can be as involved (view or handle your placenta), or as removed (you don’t have to see it at all) from the process as you wish to be.

Our clients love safety, transparency, and how much thought we put into the experience!

We provide this service to first time moms and fifth time moms alike. Most of our clients are moms that have given birth before. Placenta Capsules, Are You on the Fence

Placenta Capsules Jacksonville Florida

Placenta capsules are gaining popularity!

Kourtney and Kim Kardashian have done it, January Jones, Tamera Mowry, Mayim Bialik, Alicia Silverstone, and Kim Zolciak of Don’t Be Tardy have also done it and like our clients who have chosen placenta capsules they boast of the tremendous benefits!

First Coast Doulas knows that there’s a lot of responsibility on the consumer to make sure she is selecting someone who is following safest practices. The consumer should get clear, concise answers to her questions regarding the method and practices being used, including, but not limited to;

  • who will be handling her placenta and what training has the person had
  • possible references or testimonials
  • the process of sanitizing and cleaning before and after
  • where the encapsulation process will take place

We’re providing placenta encapsulation in the client’s home, only!

Why, you ask? Because we aim to remove all doubts and provide you with the safest, most unique experience on the First Coast!

The client is given information on how to speak with her provider about placenta encapsulation, literature and step by step instructions on storing, transporting, and handling her own placenta. She never has to see her placenta unless she wants to. In fact women see more at birth than while taking their placenta home or while it’s being processed by their placenta specialist. Again, unless she wants to be part of the process, in which case she is welcome to watch or be hands on.

Our clients love that the person who is preparing their placenta capsules is also a birth and postpartum doula. Having that extra support and knowledge from a birth and newborn pro is a huge perk!

The client’s space is left as clean as or cleaner than when her specialist arrived.

As placenta encapsulation grows in popularity it’s totally possible that strict regulations will apply. Don’t worry because First Coast Doulas is ready! Kim Kardashian Ingests Her Placenta

The Dirty Dozen, Placenta Encapsulation

The Dirty Dozen, Placenta Encapsulation

There are several things to consider when searching for someone to encapsulate your placenta. I’m sure you have your own questions, but what about the things you may have never considered?

Can you answer these dirty dozen, placenta encapsulation questions in five categories, without having any doubts in the process your placenta specialist uses?

Trusting someone with something as serious as blood borne illnesses is serious business. It’s not as simple as trusting them to bake you a casserole, it’s your life and your health you are trusting them with!

The Dirty Dozen, Placenta Encapsulation Jacksonville, FL

Placenta Transport

12. Will your placenta be transported safely considering everyone involved; you, the person encapsulating your placenta, his/her passengers, and anyone who may come in contact with your placenta should an accident or breakdown occur?

Here’s what the World Health Organization says about transporting an organ.

11. Will your placenta be at risk of cross contamination or bacteria exposure along the way?

10. Will your placenta be stored at the proper temperature at all times? How many stops will your encapsulation specialist make along the way? How long will your placenta be in the cooler in a hot car in Florida/Georgia?

9. Will the vehicle be clean? By your standards?

8. Will the car also transport pets (and their hair and possible fleas)?

7. Will there be more than one placenta in the vehicle at a time? Do you know if your placenta will be the only one in the cooler or the risks involved with sharing the space with other people’s bloodborne pathogens?

Blood, fluid, or membranes of two or more placentas should never come in contact with one another, ever! Blech!

The Dirty Dozen, Placenta Encapsulation Jacksonville, FL

“Work Space”

6. Will your placenta be taken to someone’s “work space”, kitchen, or garage/shed?

Interpret the FDA law as you will, but placenta would clearly fall under the not allowed category for home food preparation for others.

Many consumers believe their placenta is being taken to a sterile, dedicated work space or a laboratory to be processed, sadly that’s incorrect. Most are going to another family’s kitchen, even some garages or sheds. It’ll be store with their food or in a cooler and then prepared in the same space the family prepares their own food and other people’s placentas.

Will that work space/kitchen be cleaned and sanitized to your standards? Are you sure?

5. Would you like to drink a yummy fruit smoothie prepared for you in a hospital bathroom where people urinate, defecate, and shower? No really, would you?!

Yep people are doing this, and while you may never select a placenta smoothie for yourself, how would you feel about an encapsulation specialist who is o.k. with preparing a smoothie for someone to drink in a public bathroom? What do you think the hospital will say about this? You might be surprised at who is doing this.

I’m sorry, if you do not see how this is disgusting I am not sure much more will drive it home.

4. Will your placenta be stored in a fridge where there are frozen and thawing animals like snake food a.k.a. mice/rats? Will they be stored above or below your placenta?

I love snakes and iguanas as much as the next person, but YUCK!

What would it look like if your encapsulation specialist walked away from her kitchen for 5 minutes to tend to her sleepy toddler?

The Dirty Dozen, Placenta Encapsulation Jacksonville, FL

Subcontractors

3. Will your placenta encapsulation be subcontracted out?

Yeah, believe it or not this shit happens. Placentas are handed off from the mother to the person she trusted and hired to another person, and back again all while this is unknown to the mother?

This is one way an encapsulation specialist can operate to get more placentas done quicker and turn a profit. There is so much wrong with this IMHO, starting with it being unethical.

Why is this acceptable? Why does it keep happening? What can you do to ensure, as the consumer that you are safe?

First Coast Doulas has already taken steps to ensure you are safest and have no doubts!

Herbs Added to Increase Quantity

2. Will you know if anything other than your placenta is in your capsules?

There are those who’ll prepare someone’s placenta and add herbs to beef up the quantity, making them go further, and sometimes they try and justify this after being busted by saying the herbs help “increase potency”.

What the hell does that even mean?

This is asinine, completely irresponsible, and is a huge liability. Noone knows how their body or their baby’s body (through breastmilk if mom is nursing her baby) will react to these herbs. The worst part is, most people who are encapsulating with herbs are not even telling their clients they are using these herbs, they’re doing it without informed consent.

If you want to consume herbs with your capsules, that is your right to do so. We support you in that choice, but we recommend that if our clients want to take herbal supplements they first consult with their care provider and their pediatrician before starting any separately from their placenta capsules.

Imagine busting open your capsules after having weird effects to find hair, pieces of thread, seeds, and herbs you were never even asked about. What a violating feeling.

Drum roll please. Stealing the number one spot for The Dirty Dozen of Placenta Encapsulation is…

Rob Peter to Pay Paul

1. How will you know for sure the placenta you’re ingesting is yours and not someone else’s? Will two placentas be in the same “work space” or dehydrator at the same time? Will yours be on top or bottom racks? Will you know without any doubts that they were not mixed up by mistake? Will you know if they share surfaces at all? Do you know without any doubt that your dried and ground up placenta powder didn’t fall to the ground, get swept up and trashed and replaced with a few capsules from another person’s placenta?

I’m serious! Are you positive?

There are real risks associated with ingesting someone else’s placenta, or any blood products for that matter. One serious risk is hepatitis.

Any doubts there?

The Dirty Dozen, Placenta Encapsulation Jacksonville, FL

After considering the dirty dozen, is cheaper really better?

Is pickup and delivery really the best option for you or is it a matter of convenience for the person preparing your placenta?

Is convenience the top priority or is it your safety, your family, and your peace of mind?

Have no doubts with First Coast Doulas! Our clients can be as involved or uninvolved as they wish. They can view the placenta or never have to see any part of it. Everything can be done discreetly and is done with complete cleanliness in your own home!

Our encapsulation specialists provide a quality, ethical experience from start to finish. We hold our clients’ hands and walk them step by step through the paperwork process. From booking to proper storage, and transporting their own placenta to their own home, our clients love this experience and breathe a sigh of relief knowing they’re safest with First Coast Doulas!
